Kindle highlights to clean notes

Turn your Kindle's My Clippings.txt into clean notes: highlights grouped by book, duplicates and old versions of edited highlights removed, and notes attached to the passage they belong to. Export to Markdown, CSV or plain text. It's free, there's no account, and your file never leaves your browser.

Drop My Clippings.txt here (you can drop files from several Kindles at once)

Connect your Kindle by USB → open the documents folder → My Clippings.txt.

How it works

  1. Plug your Kindle into your computer with a USB cable. It appears as a drive. On a Mac, newer Kindles may need a free MTP app such as OpenMTP.
  2. Open the documents folder and copy My Clippings.txt. Every highlight, note and bookmark made on that Kindle is in it.
  3. Drop the file above, tick the books you want, and export. CSV opens in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers, and Notion imports it as a database.

Why use My Clippings.txt?

Amazon's online notebook only covers Kindle store books. Highlights in personal documents, such as articles and EPUBs you sent with Send to Kindle, PDFs and sideloaded books, are only in this file. Our guide explains why Kindle highlights don't show up in more detail.

Highlighting web articles on your Kindle? ArticleFerry, our free browser extension, turns the article you're reading into a clean EPUB and helps you send it to your Kindle. Highlights you make in it end up in this same file.

Questions

Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. The page reads the file with your browser's own file reader and builds the exports on your device. Its security policy blocks all network connections, and it uses no cookies, storage or analytics. Close the tab and everything is gone.
Which Kindles work?
Any Kindle e-reader that writes a My Clippings.txt file, including Paperwhite, Scribe, Oasis, Colorsoft and basic Kindles. It reads Kindles set to English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Japanese or Chinese. The Kindle phone and computer apps don't create this file.
Why are some highlights missing text?
Publishers can cap how much of a book you can export. Once you pass the cap, the Kindle writes "You have reached the clipping limit" instead of the text. The tool counts these and leaves them out of exports.
What counts as a duplicate?
The same highlight saved twice (common when you merge files from two Kindles), and the older version of a highlight you later extended. Untick the first option to keep everything.
