How to search your ChatGPT history and find old chats
After a few months of daily use, ChatGPT's sidebar becomes a long list of half-remembered titles. The chat you need is in there somewhere. This guide shows the fastest ways to find it with ChatGPT's own search, what search cannot find, and how to keep important chats findable in future.
Method 1: ChatGPT's built-in search (start here)
ChatGPT has a search box in the sidebar. According to OpenAI's help article Finding your chats, projects, and files in ChatGPT, it is available to signed-in users on all plans, on the web and in the iOS and Android apps.
- Click Search at the top of the sidebar. On the web you can also press Ctrl+K on Windows or Cmd+K on a Mac.
- Type words you remember from the chat. Search matches words in a chat's title or messages, so a distinctive phrase from the conversation works better than a vague topic.
- Use a filter if one is shown: All, Chats, Images, Documents or Projects.
- Click a result to reopen the chat.
Tip: search for something only that chat would contain: an unusual name, an error message, a number or a phrase you typed. Common words return dozens of chats.
What built-in search can and cannot find
| Chat type | Found by search? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Regular chats, even old ones no longer visible in the sidebar | Yes | Search a phrase from the conversation. |
| Archived chats | Yes | You can also find them in Settings → Data controls. |
| Chats inside a project | Yes | Or open the project from the sidebar. |
| Locked chats | No, not in regular search | Go to Projects → Locked chats and unlock with your PIN or device authentication. |
| Deleted chats | No | Deleted chats cannot be recovered through search. |
All of this comes from OpenAI's help article linked above, which was updated in October 2026. If a result you expect is missing, OpenAI suggests checking you are signed in to the right account or workspace, trying different words, switching the filter to All, and giving recently changed chats time to update.
Method 2: Search by date
People often remember when they had a conversation better than what they called it. OpenAI's help article does not list a date filter for sidebar search. Two workarounds:
- Scroll the sidebar. Chats are listed newest first, so scrolling works for the last few weeks.
- Use your data export. Settings → Data controls → Export emails you a download link (OpenAI's export help). The archive includes a
chat.htmlfile you can open in a browser and search with Ctrl+F, and aconversations.jsonfile that records when each chat was created. It is heavy for one chat, but it covers everything up to the export date. Our guide on exporting a ChatGPT conversation has the details.
Method 3: Make important chats easy to find next time
Search works best when you give it something to find. A few habits help:
- Rename chats you will need again. ChatGPT's automatic titles are often generic. Use the chat's menu to rename it with words you would search for.
- Use Projects for ongoing work. Chats moved into a project are grouped together and share the project's instructions and files. Our guide to organising ChatGPT chats into folders compares Projects with folders.
- Archive instead of delete. Archived chats leave the sidebar but stay searchable. Deleted chats are gone.
Method 4: Folders and full-text search with ConvoRail
If you want to file chats into folders and search inside them, our free extension ConvoRail adds a small panel at the top of the ChatGPT sidebar in Chrome, Firefox and Edge.
- Folders and subfolders: drag chats in, or use Add current chat to folder. Unlike moving a chat into a project, filing it in a folder does not change its instructions or context.
- Search: press Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+F to search chat titles, and the full text of chats you have opened since installing it.
- Export: save the open chat as Markdown or JSON, or a whole folder as JSON.
- Private: folders and the search index stay in your browser. No account, no server, no analytics.
Honest limits: ConvoRail's full-text search only covers chats you have opened since you installed it, folders do not sync between computers (use backup and restore), and it works on ChatGPT's website on desktop only. For finding any chat in your whole history, ChatGPT's built-in search is still the first stop.
Try ConvoRail. Free folders, search and export for ChatGPT, for Chrome, Firefox and Edge.
FAQ
Can I search all my old ChatGPT conversations?
Yes. ChatGPT's sidebar search covers regular and archived chats, including old ones that no longer show in the sidebar. Locked chats are searched separately and deleted chats cannot be found.
What is the ChatGPT search shortcut?
On the web, Ctrl+K on Windows and Cmd+K on macOS.
Why can't I find a chat I know exists?
Check you are in the right account or workspace, look in Projects → Locked chats and in Archived chats, and try more distinctive words. If it was deleted, it cannot be recovered.
Is "ChatGPT search" the same as searching my history?
No. ChatGPT can also search the web for answers. Sidebar search only looks through your own chats, projects and files.
