ChatGPT extensions for Firefox: folders, search and export
Most "best ChatGPT extensions" lists are written for Chrome. If you use Firefox, two questions matter more: what Firefox already gives you for ChatGPT without any add-on, and which add-ons on Firefox Add-ons (AMO) are actually kept up to date. This guide covers both. It is sorted by job (chatting next to a page, organising chats, searching them, and exporting them) rather than by a single "top 10".
Disclosure: we make ConvoRail, one of the add-ons below. Figures for every add-on (daily users, ratings, last update and permissions) come from their public AMO listings, checked on 26 October 2026.
First: what Firefox does on its own
Firefox has a built-in AI chatbot sidebar. Mozilla's AI controls announcement lists ChatGPT, Anthropic Claude, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini and Le Chat Mistral as providers, and since Firefox 148 you switch it on or off under Settings → AI controls. Pick ChatGPT and it opens in a narrow panel next to the page you are reading, so you can ask about a page without juggling tabs. Firefox's chatbot feature page notes that what you type goes to the provider you chose, under that provider's privacy policy.
The sidebar is the regular ChatGPT site in a smaller window, so it doesn't add anything ChatGPT itself lacks. If what you want is folders, better search or a clean export, you need ChatGPT's own tools or an add-on.
What ChatGPT already includes
- Projects group chats with shared files and instructions (OpenAI help). They are the closest thing to built-in folders, but a project changes the context the chat runs with, and projects don't nest. Our guide to organising ChatGPT chats into folders compares the two approaches.
- Search (the search icon or Ctrl+K) finds past chats by title and content (OpenAI help). See how to search your ChatGPT history for archived and older chats.
- Data export (Settings → Data controls → Export) emails you a download of your whole account, not a single chat (OpenAI help). Our export guide covers the one-chat options.
Everything above works the same in Firefox as in Chrome. The add-ons below fill the gaps: folders that don't change a chat's context, search across message text, and one-click export of a single chat.
Firefox add-ons for ChatGPT, by job
"Daily users" is AMO's average number of people using the add-on per day. A low number isn't bad in itself, since new add-ons start at zero, but the "last updated" date matters: ChatGPT changes its page layout often, and add-ons that aren't maintained tend to break quietly.
| Add-on | Main job | Sites it can read | Daily users · rating | Last updated |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Superpower ChatGPT | All-in-one: folders, search, export, prompt manager and much more | ChatGPT, Claude and a few OpenAI sites, plus its own site | about 1,600 · 3.4★ (136) | October 2026 |
| AI Chat Exporter | Export chats from ChatGPT and other AI sites to Markdown, PDF, Word and more; open source | All websites | about 1,800 · 4.5★ (15) | October 2026 |
| AI Exporter | Export to PDF, image, Markdown or straight to Notion | All websites, plus cookies access | about 4,900 · 4.2★ (52) | May 2026 |
| GPT Search: Chat History | Search your ChatGPT history; also on Firefox for Android | ChatGPT | about 370 · 4.9★ (14) | June 2025 |
| ChatGPT Folders | Simple folders in the sidebar; open source (MPL 2.0) | ChatGPT, plus tab access | about 190 · 4.3★ (11) | October 2026 |
| ConvoRail (ours) | Folders, full-text search and Markdown/JSON export, all stored locally | ChatGPT only | New (approved 26 October 2026) | October 2026 |
AMO also lists several "ChatGPT in Sidebar" add-ons. Since Firefox now has a sidebar chatbot built in, most people don't need one.
If you want everything in one add-on
Superpower ChatGPT has the longest feature list on Firefox: nested folders, search, bulk actions, export, a prompt library and more. Its pricing page shows a free plan with caps, and Pro at $10 a month billed yearly or $15 month to month, which removes the folder and prompt limits. Its Firefox rating (3.4★) is well below its Chrome rating, so read the recent Firefox reviews before you install.
If you mainly want to export
AI Chat Exporter is free, open source (AGPL) and says it runs locally. It covers ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and others, and saves to many formats including PDF. AI Exporter has more users and can send chats to Notion, but asks for more access, including cookies. Both can read every website you visit, which is a wide permission for an export tool. That is the trade-off for supporting many AI sites from one add-on.
If you want folders and search that stay on your computer
ConvoRail is our add-on, now available on Firefox. It adds a small panel to the top of the ChatGPT sidebar:
- Folders, each with one level of subfolders. Drag a chat in, or use "Add current chat to folder". Filing a chat doesn't move it into a project, so its context stays as it was.
- Search across chat titles and the full text of chats you have opened (Ctrl+Shift+F), with results that jump straight to the chat.
- Export a chat as Markdown or JSON, or a whole folder as JSON, plus backup and restore from the toolbar button.
Folders and the search index live in Firefox's own extension storage. There is no ConvoRail account and no server, and the add-on can only read chatgpt.com. On its AMO listing, ConvoRail declares that it collects no data. The trade-off: folders don't sync between computers automatically. Use backup and restore to move them.
Get ConvoRail for Firefox. Free, no account, works only on ChatGPT.
How to check a ChatGPT add-on before installing
- Read the permissions on AMO. Scroll to the permissions section of the listing. An organiser for ChatGPT only needs chatgpt.com. "Access your data for all websites" is a much bigger ask.
- Look at "Data collection". Newer Firefox add-ons state on the listing whether they collect data, and what kind.
- Check "Last updated" and recent reviews. When ChatGPT redesigns its sidebar, unmaintained add-ons stop working. Reviews from the past month tell you whether it still works.
- Prefer local storage for chat content. Your chats can contain work and personal details. An add-on that keeps folders and indexes on your computer exposes less than one that syncs them to its own server.
- Keep private windows off unless you need them. Firefox doesn't run add-ons in private windows unless you allow it per add-on, under Add-ons and themes → (add-on) → Run in Private Windows.
FAQ
Is there an official ChatGPT extension for Firefox?
Firefox's built-in AI chatbot sidebar supports ChatGPT, so you can use ChatGPT next to any page without installing anything. Folders, message search and single-chat export come from third-party add-ons such as the ones above.
Can I add folders to ChatGPT in Firefox?
Yes. ChatGPT's own Projects work in Firefox, and add-ons such as ConvoRail, Superpower ChatGPT and ChatGPT Folders add folders to the sidebar. Our comparison of ChatGPT folder extensions covers free limits and prices.
Do these add-ons work on Firefox for Android?
Mostly not. Of the add-ons in the table, only GPT Search lists Android support on AMO as of 26 October 2026.
Will an add-on see my ChatGPT conversations?
Any organiser, search or export add-on has to read the chat page to work. The question is where that content goes. Check whether the listing says data is collected, and whether folders and indexes stay in your browser or sync to the developer's server.
What happens to my folders if I remove the add-on?
Your chats stay in your ChatGPT account. Folders kept in local extension storage are deleted with the add-on, so export a backup first. In ConvoRail that's Backup in the toolbar popup.
