ChatGPT chats disappeared? How to find them, and what can't be recovered

You open ChatGPT and a conversation, or your whole history, isn't where you left it. Most of the time the chats still exist and are just somewhere else. The checks below go from most to least likely. The honest bad news comes first, though: a chat that was deleted can't be restored, not in ChatGPT and not by OpenAI Support (OpenAI help).

Disclosure: we make ConvoRail, a browser extension mentioned at the end for backups. All the checks work without it.

1. Search for it instead of scrolling

An older chat that has dropped out of the sidebar hasn't necessarily been deleted. Open Search in the sidebar (Ctrl+K or Cmd+K on the web) and type a distinctive word from the conversation. Search covers regular and archived chats (OpenAI help). Our guide on searching your ChatGPT history has more tips.

2. Check your archived chats

Archiving hides a chat from the sidebar without deleting it, and it takes one click with no confirmation, so it's easy to do by accident. There's also an Archive all chats button that empties the sidebar in one go. Go to Settings → Data controls → Archived chats (or View archived chats, depending on your device) and select Unarchive to bring a chat back.

3. Look inside your projects

Chats moved into a project are listed under that project, not in the main chat list. Open each project in the sidebar. While you're there, check Projects → Locked chats: locked chats don't appear in regular history or search until you unlock them with your PIN or device authentication.

4. Make sure it's the same account and workspace

This is the usual cause when everything seems to have gone. Different sign-in methods or email addresses can mean a different account, and a work or team workspace keeps its chats separate from your personal one. Check the account menu: the email address, the sign-in method (Google, Apple, Microsoft, email or SSO) and the workspace name should match the ones you used before. Workspace admins can also set retention policies that remove old chats automatically.

5. Was it a temporary chat?

Chats started with Temporary switched on never enter your history. If you didn't save one before leaving it, it can't be reopened. OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety reasons, but you can't get it back (OpenAI help).

6. Refresh, sign in again, and check for an outage

A history that fails to load or shows only some chats is often a passing problem. Refresh the page, sign out and back in, or try the app on another device. If it's still missing, check OpenAI Status for an incident. During outages, history often comes back on its own once the service recovers.

7. Request a data export to see what's really there

Settings → Data controls → Export emails you a download link with every chat still tied to your account (OpenAI help). If a chat is in the export but not in the app, it hasn't been lost. If it isn't in the export either, it was deleted or it belongs to another account. When you contact OpenAI Support, give your account email, sign-in method, workspace name and roughly when the chats went missing.

Next time: keep your own copy

Because deleted chats are gone for good, the only real protection is a copy you control. For the occasional important chat, the official export is enough. To keep copies as you go, our free extension ConvoRail adds a panel to the ChatGPT sidebar that exports the open chat as Markdown or JSON, files chats into folders, and backs up your folders to a file. It's all local, with no account and no server. Honest limits: it can't recover chats that are already deleted, and its backups cover the folders and chats it has seen since you installed it. See our guide to exporting a ChatGPT conversation for every method.

FAQ

Can I recover deleted ChatGPT chats?

No. Deleting removes a chat from your account straight away, and OpenAI schedules it for permanent deletion within 30 days. Neither ChatGPT nor OpenAI Support can restore it. Archived chats, on the other hand, can always be brought back.

Why did all my ChatGPT history disappear at once?

Usually you're signed in to a different account or workspace, someone used Archive all chats, or there's a temporary outage. Check those three first.

Do archived chats get deleted?

No. Archived chats stay in your account under the same retention rules as other saved chats until you delete them.

Where do chats go when I move them into a project?

They're listed inside that project in the sidebar, and they pick up the project's instructions and files.
