ChatGPT folder extensions compared
ChatGPT has Projects, but many people still want plain folders: a place to file a chat without changing its instructions, with subfolders and a search that looks inside messages. Several browser extensions add exactly that. This page compares four of them on what matters before you install: what the free version really includes, what the paid plan costs, which browsers it supports and where your data goes.
Disclosure: we make ConvoRail, one of the four. Everything about the other extensions comes from their own pricing pages and store listings, checked on 22 October 2026, and linked below. Prices and limits change, so check before you buy. We have tried to be fair: for many people, one of the others is the better choice, and we say so.
Before you install anything: ChatGPT Projects
ChatGPT's built-in Projects are free and need no extension. A project groups chats and gives them shared instructions and files. If that is what you want, you may not need an extension at all. Our guide on organising ChatGPT chats into folders explains when Projects are enough and when folders help.

Superpower ChatGPT: the everything extension
Superpower describes itself as the first ChatGPT browser extension, built since December 2022. Beyond folders and search it has a prompt manager, prompt chains and queue, highlights and notes, a conversation tree map, an image gallery, audio playback and much more. The free plan includes up to 5 folders and 5 saved prompts; Pro removes the caps.
Choose it if you live in ChatGPT all day and want every power tool in one place, and you are happy to pay for Pro once you pass 5 folders.
AI Toolbox: folders across four AIs
AI Toolbox (formerly ChatGPT Toolbox) works on ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Grok, with one folder tree and one prompt library across them. Its free plan gives 2 folders with unlimited subfolders and the first 5 results of each full-text search. Paid plans are per AI, with a lifetime option. It says conversation content stays in your browser, while folders, prompts and tags sync through its servers, encrypted at rest.
Choose it if you use several AI assistants and want them organised in one place, and a lifetime licence appeals to you.
Sortbase: one workspace with sync
Sortbase organises ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok chats into shared nested folders, with keyword search, a prompt library and one-click transfer of a conversation to another model. You sign in, and your folders, chats and prompts sync across Chrome windows. It is a subscription after a 7-day trial that needs a card; if you cancel, you can still browse what you saved.
Choose it if you want cross-device sync and cross-model transfer, and a subscription is fine.
ConvoRail: simple, free and private
ConvoRail is ours. It does fewer things on purpose: a folder panel at the top of the ChatGPT sidebar, one level of subfolders, search across titles and the full text of chats you have opened, Markdown and JSON export, and backup and restore. There is no folder limit, no account and no server: everything is stored in your browser.
Honest limits: ChatGPT only (no Claude or Gemini yet), no sync between computers, full-text search only covers chats opened after you install it, and no prompt library. If you need those, pick one of the others.
Choose it if you want folders without a subscription or an account, use Firefox or Edge, or simply prefer that your chat data never leaves your computer.
Try ConvoRail. Free folders, search and export for ChatGPT. Chrome, Firefox and Edge.
How to choose in 30 seconds
- Projects are enough? Use ChatGPT Projects and install nothing.
- Every power feature: Superpower ChatGPT.
- Several AI assistants, one folder tree: AI Toolbox or Sortbase.
- Sync across devices: Sortbase or AI Toolbox.
- Free, no limits on folders, no account, Firefox or Edge: ConvoRail.
A note on permissions and privacy
Any folder extension needs to read the ChatGPT page to show your chats, so it can see your conversations. Before installing one, read the "Privacy practices" section on its store listing and its privacy policy, and prefer extensions that only ask for access to the AI sites they work with. If you stop using an extension, export your folders first and then remove it.
FAQ
Does ChatGPT have folders now?
ChatGPT has Projects, which group chats with shared instructions and files. It does not have simple nested folders, which is what these extensions add.
Which ChatGPT folder extension works in Firefox?
Superpower ChatGPT, AI Toolbox and ConvoRail all have Firefox versions. Sortbase is Chrome only at the time of writing.
Is there a free ChatGPT folder extension without limits?
ConvoRail has no folder limit and no paid plan at the time of writing. Superpower and AI Toolbox have free plans with folder limits (5 and 2 top-level folders).
Will a folder extension delete or change my chats?
A well-behaved one only adds its own panel and stores folder assignments separately. ConvoRail never changes, moves or deletes chats in your ChatGPT account.
